Biographical history
George J. Desbarats (1861-1944) was the first Deputy Minister of the Department of National Defence from 1923 to 1932. Born in Quebec, he received a B.A. Sc. from Laval University in 1901. He joined the public service in 1879 as an engineer with the Department of Railways and Canals. In 1908, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Marine and Fisheries and from 1910 until 1922, he was Deputy Minister and Comptroller of Naval Service. Desbarats represented the Canadian government in 1912 at the Radio Telegraph Conference in London, and in 1920 at Seamen's Conference of the League of Nations. Throughout his career, Desbarats strove to ensure the survival of the Royal Canadian Navy.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of three folders of material documenting George J. Desbarats' career as Deputy Minister of Marine and Fisheries, Deputy Minister of the Naval Service and Deputy Minister of the Department of National Defence. Includes correspondence and official papers pertaining to the Naval Service with extensive documentation on the construction of vessels for the Naval Service of Canada. Also includes several publications, biographical information and drafts of speeches.
