Biographical history
Born in Woodstock, Ontario in 1934, George A. Calder attended Victoria Public School, Central Public School and Woodstock Collegiate Institute as well as Ridley College, in St. Catharines. Following that, he received a B.A. in History, Philosophy and Politics from Queen’s University in Kingston and then went to Osgoode Law School to obtain his LL.B. In 1960, he articled with McCarthy & McCarthy, in Toronto, and was called to the Bar in 1962. He had a law practice in Woodstock for thirty-seven years and was appointed a Queen’s Counsel in 1975.
In Woodstock he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Woodstock District Chamber of Commerce in 1963 and served as a Director until 1979. He was also elected to the Executive Committee of the Chamber in 1967, serving there for thirteen years. Besides serving as the President in 1974, 1975 and 1977, he was the Chairman of the 1977 Centennial Committee when the Chamber celebrated its 100th Anniversary. Following that he, continued as a member in the Chamber, and more recently as an honorary member.
In addition, George Calder was a Director on the Ontario Chamber of Commerce from 1980 to 1982, and again from 1988 to 1993, also servicing as a member of the Executive Committee for his final four years on the Executive Committee.
Other community activities include serving as the Past Vice-President of the Oxford Historical Society, as well as the Chairman of the Research Committee. He is also a Past Director of the Woodstock Strings; Past President of the Oxford Golf and Country Club, Past President of the local Children’s Aid Society, and Past President of the Victoria Club. He also help organize the Woodstock United Appeal Association in 1962 through 1963 and served as the second President of the Board of Directors for two terms in 1964 and 1965.
He is married to Wendy Robinette Calder, a former Mayor of the City of Woodstock. They have three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The records were compiled and/or created by George A. Calder and were eventually donated to the County of Oxford Archives on February 4th, 2013.
Scope and content
The collection consists of various materials relating to the Vansittart family (specifically Vice Admiral Henry Vansittart) and to the early history of Woodstock. It includes newspaper clippings, land documents, wills and other legal style documents, photographs, booklets and essays as well as a framed miniature portrait and military cross.
