Biographical history
Gabriel Kolko (1932- ), historian and author, joined the York University History Department in 1970. Before this date he had taught at the University of Pennsylvania and the State University of New York-Buffalo. Kolko's research interests include American political history and foreign policy in the twentieth century. He is the author of 'Authority, wealth and power,' (1962), 'Roots of war, 1943-1945,' 'Crimes of war,' (1971), 'Anatomy of War; Vietnam, the United States, and the Modern Historical Experience (1985)', and co-author of 'The limits of power, 1945-1954,' (1972).
Custodial history
The material pertaining to The limits of power was initially donated to the Government Documents Section of the York University Scott Library in March, 1971, which in turn transferred it to York University Archives and Special Collections in April, 1972. The material was photocopied from collections in several American repositories. A further document, donated by Mr. Dick Nanto, Tokyo, Japan, consisting of a photocopy of the draft constitution of Japan, 1946, was donated in 1973.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of Gabriel Kolko's research files, publication files, correspondence, and personal files. The research and publication files contain photocopies [196-?] from several American manuscript collections, from different repositories, which were used in the writing of 'The limits of power, 1945-1954,' which Gabriel Kolko co-authored with Joyce Kolko in 1972; and the preparation of Professor Kolko's book, 'Anatomy of War; Vietnam, the United States, and the Modern Historical Experience', published in 1985.
