In 1844 the Synod of Nova Scotia in connection with the Church of Scotland dissented from the Church of Scotland to become Synod of Nova Scotia adhering to the Westminster Standards. In 1848, this Synod was renamed Synod of the Free Church of Nova Scotia. In 1860, it joined with the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia to form the Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces of British North America.
