    Biografie

    A. Fortescue Duguid (1887-1976) was Director of the Historical Section of the Canadian Army during 1921-1945. Born at Bourtie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, he came to Canada at an early age and graduated from McGill University as an engineer in 1912. He served overseas, in France from 1915 to 1918, and was appointed director of the historical section of the Canadian Army in 1921. One of his major mandates was the preparation of a more complete and detailed historical narrative on the operations of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The first volume of Duguid's official history was published in 1938 as "Official History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War 1914-1919. General Series - Vol. 1 From the Outbreak of War to the Formation of the Canadian Corps Aug 1914 - Sept. 1915. The other volumes of the series were never finished. Duguid retired from the Canadian Army in 1947 and died in Kingston, Ontario.

    This fonds resided with the Army historical section which amalgamated with the other historical sections in 1964 to form the Directorate of History.

    Fonds consists of materials documenting A. Fortescue Duguid's activities in the preparation of the "Official History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War 1914-1919" and his interest in military history. Also includes documents regarding the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915, military history publications, and various other subjects of a military nature. Includes correspondence, reports, articles, and various other documents. There are 6 series:
