Administrative history
La Défriche was a local history project conducted by a group of students at the Collège Universitaire de Hearst, now the Université de Hearst, during the summer of 1974 for a summer-work program called Perspectives-Jeunesse. Noticing that nothing had been written on the history of the area from Ryland to Val-Rita, including the villages of Jogues and Coppell, the group, which consisted of Danielle Coulombe, Luce Fortin, Noëlline Marchildon, Hélène Touchette and Carmelle Vallières, realized a series of interviews with pioneers of the region. Following the interviews, a document entitled La Défriche was written. A few years later, a copy of the audio recordings were given to the Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française (CRCCF) at the University of Ottawa.
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds contains digitized copies of the interviews recorded by the students during the summer of 1974. Also found in the fonds are textual documents related to the project as well as notes regarding the CRCCF’s original archival classification.
Notes area
Physical condition
Some of the audio recordings are damaged.
Immediate source of acquisition
The Centre d’archives de la Grande Zone argileuse acquired the fonds from Danielle Coulombe in 2012. Mrs Coulombe received the documents from the CRCCF in 2008.
Arrangement
The archivist organized the records once acquired. The CRCCF’s original classification has been respected for the series of interviews. The original reels on which the interviews were recorded were lost. A copy was kept by the CRCCF; however some interviews have not been located. Folder DÉ1-032 only contains photocopies.
