Administrative history

Credit Unions are cooperative financial institutions, democratically owned and controlled by the members. Credit Unions adhere to cooperative principles stipulating that each member is entitled to one vote within the organization. Hundreds of financial cooperatives will emerge in Ontario in 1940, 1950 and 1960. They are founded by groups of workers, labor unions, as well as various community associations. Found mainly in English-speaking regions, Credit Unions’ goals are to encourage the financial autonomy of their members through mutual support.

A Credit Union branch is opened in Kapuskasing in the late 1930’s; its official name is the Northland Savings and Credit Union Limited. The institution will be operational for more than sixty years, during which it will support many community organizations including various local sports teams.

The Kapuskasing Credit Union closes in 2008. The Caisse populaire de Kapsukasing inherits all of the branch’s records and will be responsible for the liquidation. The final liquidation occurs in 2011, when all surplus funds are given back to members.
