History
The Village of Erieau, Kent County, Ontario was incorporated under the terms of the Baldwin Act, Chapter 81, Canada Statutes, 1849. As an incorporated, lower tier municipality, Erieau had an elected Council consisting of a Reeve and Councillors depending on population. It responsibilites related largely to upkeep of the local roads and delivery of services such as water and hydro. It had the power to raise money through direct taxation on land and issue of debentures. Under the terms of Bill 26, the Savings and Restructuring Act, 1996, Erieau was amalgamated into the new Municipality of Chatham-Kent, effective January 1, 1998.
