Administrative history
Empress United Church was established in 1925; formerly Methodist. The congregation started as the North Street Methodist Church ca. 1870, which decided to purchase property for another church, originally known as Petersville Methodist Church. This second congregation was considered a part of North Street Methodist until it became an independent charge in 1876; The church name later changed to London West Methodist (as Petersville became known ca. 1880) and then Empress Avenue Methodist Church. In 1916, the Kensington Mission amalgamated with Empress Ave. Methodist and a Sunday School continued in the Mission building until 1920 when the property was then sold. The church joined the United Church in 1925. When the congregation moved to a new church building in 1955, the congregation became known as Empress United, dropping the “Avenue”. In 2010, Empress United Church closed and the congregation amalgamated with Colborne Street United Church.
