R. Douglas Elliott is a founding partner of the law firm Roy Elliott O’Connor LLP in Toronto, Ontario, where he practices as a litigation lawyer. Elliott received his B.A. from the University of Western Ontario in 1979, and his LL.B. from the University of Toronto in 1982. Elliott was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1984. Elliott served as counsel in several landmark cases, including the same-sex marriage case, where he successfully represented the Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto in the Ontario Court of Appeal, and Hislop v. Canada, a suit for Canada Pension Plan survivor benefits in same-sex relationships. Elliott was the founding president of the International Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Intersex Law Association (ILGLaw), and a founding co-chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee and the Canadian Bar Association’s national Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Committee. Elliott was awarded the Law Society Medal by the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2010.
