Administrative history
The Eastern Dairy School was begun in November 1894 by Queen’s University at Kingston, under James W. Robertson, then Dairy Commissioner for the Dominion of Canada. It was originally known as the Kingston Dairy School. It offered courses in butter and cheese making and later on in milk testing. By 1896, it had been taken over by the Ontario Department of Agriculture, and the school was offered under the ‘Department of Mining and Agriculture’.

Scope and content
The collection includes school calendars that provide a brief history of the school, describe its goals, criteria for eligibility, rules of conduct, the facilities, and the courses themselves. Also included is a record-book of applications for attendance from 1903 to 1966. In addition, the collection contains registration books, one under the original name of Kingston Diary School and the rest under the name Eastern Dairy School. These books document who the students were, their place of residence, past experience in the field of cheese and butter making, and a ledger of course enrollments. Furthermore, there is a list of school alumni dating back from the school’s inception in 1898 to 1945, as well as an alphabetical ledger of course enrollments from 1898 to 1974. In the collection there are also examination results, prize winners, and negatives for class pictures.
