Biographical history
Dr. Petras Povilas Lukoševičius, born 1920-5-19 in Kūlupėnai, Lithuania, died 2007-12-20 in Toronto, Canada, was an agronomist and a public figure in the Lithuanian community in Canada. He studied at the Žemės Ųkio Akademija (Agriculture Academy) in Lithuania (1941-1944) before fleeing Lithuania in 1944 for Austria , where he spent a year. He then spent 3 years in Germany (1945-1948) during which time he earned a degree in agronomy at the University of Bonn (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn). After emigrating to Canada in 1948 and settling in the Montreal, he worked as a gardener and landscaper on an estate in Boucherville, Quebec, until 1954, when he was accepted at McGill University, from which he received his Master’s degree and doctorate in agronomy in 1956 and 1962, respectively. He worked for the federal Department of Agriculture in various positions from 1957 until his retirement in 1985. Lukoševičius was also very active in the Lithuanian community in Montreal and Canada, which includes serving as Co-Chair of the II Lithuanian World Community Seimas (1963), being President of the Lithuanian Canadian Community National Executive (1962-1965), being Chair of the Lithuanian Canadian Foundation Board of Directors (1988-1990), and establishing a representative office for the Lithuanian World Community in Lithuania in 1992 and serving as its first official representative in Lithuania (1992-1993). He was also a long time member of the “Gintaras” Lithuanian folk ensemble’s parents’ committee and the Aušros Vartų (Notre Dame Porte de l’Aurore) Lithuanian Catholic parish council in Montreal. He also served as the first chair of the Lithuanian Canadian Community’s Museum-Archives Committee which was established to oversee the activities of the Lithuanian Museum-Archives of Canada.

Fonds consists of textual records including correspondence, minutes, reports, press clippings, programs, publications, speeches, curriculum vitae and other materials relating to Petras Povilas Lukoševičius‘ involvement in the activities of the Lithuanian community in Montreal and Canada including specifically his involvement with: Kanados Lietuvių Bendruomenė (Lithuanian Canadian Community); Kanados Lietuvių Fondas (Lithuanian Canadian Foundation); Pasaulio Lietuvių Bendruomenė (Lithuanian World Community); Kanados Lietuvių Dienos (Lithuanian Canadian Days) held in Montreal; Montreal’s Gintaras Lithuanian folk ensemble; and Aušros Vartų Parapija (paroisse Notre Dame Porte de l’Aurore) in Montreal.
