    Biographical history

    Douglas Sadler (1916- ) is a teacher, naturalist and author. Born in England, he served with the 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats) during World War II and with the Queen's Royal Regiment. He met his wife Joan during the war and they were married in 1942. They emigrated to Canada in 1950 and Sadler began his career as a journalist on the Port Hope Guide and later, on the Peterborough Examiner. His nature column "Come Quietly With Me" appeared for over 30 years. Sadler returned to school as a mature student and attended Peterborough Teachers' College. He eventually became vice-principal of Warkworth school and worked there for 12 years before becoming an outdoor consultant with the Peterborough Board of Education. His last teaching job was at Bailieboro, Ontario. He earned a degree in geography from Trent University in 1978 and was awarded an honorary degree from Trent in 1988. His books include, "Reading Nature's Clues
