    Biographical history

Russell Kneale Magee (1906-1972) was a noted surgeon. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA in biology and then a medical degree in 1930. He took surgical training in Toronto and spent two years in England where he wrote his FRCSE. In 1936, he and his wife Dr Agnes King Moffat joined the staff at Peterborough Clinic. Magee was president of the medical staff of Nichols Hospital in the 1940's and in 1954 was Chief of Staff at Civic Hospital. In 1942 he joined the CAMC and saw service overseas with the 20th Canadian General Hospital in England, France, Belgium and Holland. Magee studied several experimental surgical techniques while overseas, particularly on German POW's. In Holland he studied the use of the Kuntscher Pin on fractured femurs. He brought this innovative K-Pin to Canada after the war. They were manufactured at CGE under his supervision. Magee also wrote several papers on surgical techniques.
