Administrative history
It is in 1905 that the University begins to offer part-time degree programmes. In 1959, the Department of Extension is created to centralize the administration of part-time programmes in one office and to alleviate the excessive burden imposed upon the limited staff of the Faculty of Arts by an increasing number of part-time applicants. In 1973, the Department becomes the Service for Continuing Education. Under the Office of the Vice-Rector (Academic), the Service offers courses and programmes to persons wishing to continue their university studies on a part-time basis, both on and off campus, through its evening and summer courses. Courses are also offered in Cornwall, Hawkesbury and Pembrooke. The tele-education section co-ordinates credit courses by means of Teleconference, correspondence, television and web. Since 2002, the Service for Continuing Education reports to Teaching and Learning Support Service. The Section offers a variety of non-credit courses in English and in French in the Arts domain of Human Sciences and of Sciences up until 1981 when it is replaced by Professional Training Service that is under the helm of the Vice-President (Academic and Provost).
