Administrative history
In 1940 the Director of Organization was directly responsible to the Adjutant-General (AG) or the following duties: organization; mobilization; reinforcements; establishments; AG estimates; promulgation of orders and regulations; returns; and general direction of the duties of the Directorate.
In 1965 the Director of Organization was responsible to the DGOM [Director General Organization and Manpower] for:
• Developing and promulgating organization policy and procedures;
• Reviewing organization policy to encompass new management techniques and new administrative and financial systems and procedures;
• Reviewing proposed program changes to ensure conformity with organization policy and approved organization practice;
• Promulgating orders and instructions to authorize the implementation of approved changes in organizations, including the formation, relocation, re-organization, re-designation and disbandment of commands, units and other elements of the Canadian Forces;
• Periodically reviewing organizations; and
• Maintaining organizational records.
The Directorate was cancelled in 1996.
Custodial history
The SD 1 Letters were originally part of the Canadian Army Historical Section’s Kardex Collection and filed under the reference number 112.3S2.003 (D13). They were then transferred to the Section Library, and then to the Director of History, Tradition (DHH3). The dates for each transfer are unknown.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of SD 1 Letters from 1941 to 1964. These were orders promulgated to formalize the organization of units in he Canadian Army and were intended for organizational purposes only. The SDI Letters were replaced in 1965 by the Canadian Forces Organization Orders (CFOOs). The set of letters is incomplete.

The SD 1 Letters hard copies were received during February and March 2018 from the DHH Digitization Team. The original hard copies were scanned by the Team.
