    General note

The Canadian military first studied the strategic need for nuclear submarines in 1959. These studies lead to the Defence White Paper of 1964 which argued that the government should seriously consider acquiring nuclear submarines. This initiative foundered because of concerns that nuclear technology was too immature to be used safely, and so three Oberon Class diesel-electric submarines were purchased from Britain. However, in 1980, as part of a planned up-grade in the navy's ships, the government began studying how to replace its diesel-electric submarines, establishing the Canadian Submarine Acquisition Programme (CASAP). As a result, in 1984 the federal government began re-examining the feasibility of acquiring nuclear submarines.
