Administrative history
The Dept. of National Defence (DND) was created in 1923 when the Department of Naval Services, the Department of Militia and Defence, and the Air Board amalgamated into one body. The creation of DND brought the Army, Navy, Air Force and Militia together in one department, although each maintained separate headquarters. After the Second World War however, DND was brought together under a single minister, and in 1964, the Chief of Defence Staff was created to act as the head of the military in Canada. In 1968, the Army, Navy and Air Force were brought together as the Canadian Armed Forces, and in 1972 DND reorganized to merge the civilian and military branches in the National Defence Headquarters (NDHQ).
Custodial history
The file 2013/7 had been passed to Lt(N) Delaney by Pat Barnhouse, member of the Canadian Naval Technical History Association who received it from an unnamed engineer colleague.
