Administrative history
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures was established in 1949 under the name of East and South European Institute. It is mainly identified with Slavic studies between 1957 and 1980. It adopted its current name in 1980. Reporting to the Faculty of Arts, the Department offers German, Italian, Portuguese, Slavic (Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian) and Spanish language, literature and culture courses. It also offers courses in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew and Celtic Studies. Concentration and Honors students are encouraged to pursue a part of their studies abroad through various exchange and foreign study programmes.

Scope and content
The fonds contain files which document the functions of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. It includes annual reports (1961-1962, 1965-1968, 1974-1975), minutes of the Department (1971-1972), minutes of the Executive Committee (1974-1976), correspondence, student guidebooks (1970-1980) and files concerning the Iwashniuk Ukrainian Studies and Research funds.
