Administrative history

Although the TGH has, since 1897, had medical staff associated with the University of Toronto’s Department of Microbiology (formerly Bacteriology; Medical Microbiology; Microbiology and Parasitology), it was not until 1952 that a discrete Department of Bacteriology (as it was then called) was established at the TGH. In that year Dr. P.H. Greey was appointed University of Toronto Professor of Bacteriology and Head of the Department of Bacteriology at the TGH.

In 1970 Dr. N. Hinton was appointed Chairman of the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Toronto and TGH Microbiologist-in-Chief. In 1983 Dr. L. Spence was appointed (acting 1980-1983) Microbiologist-in-Chief, TGH and (acting 1980-1983) Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Toronto.

Following the 1986 merger with the Toronto Western Hospital to form The Toronto Hospital, the TGH Department of Microbiology was subsumed by the TTH Department of Medical Microbiology.
