The Department of Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine was established in the Faculty of Medicine in 1958. The Department changed its name several times before adopting its current name in 1968. The Department offers undergraduate medical students a course in epidemiologic methods in the first year and a clerkship in community medicine in third year, and contributes to several other courses. It also operates a residency programme which trains graduates physicians as specialists in community medicine. The Department engages in a broad range of research relating to community medicine, with special emphasis on health promotion, environmental epidemiology, and health services systems. Through its faculty and its Health Care Research Unit, it provides consultation to community health agencies in applied health research.
