Administrative history
Davenport-Perth Community Ministry, located in the west Toronto community of Davenport, was established in response to a Toronto West Presbytery Commission formed in 1984 to determine the direction of the ministry of Davenport-Perth United Church. At the same time, the Pelham Neighborhood Action Committee, consisting of neighborhood residents, was formed to review the social conditions of the Davenport West/Junction Triangle area. This committee identified serious social, economic and health issues in this area. In 1985, the Toronto West Presbytery Commission recommended making the property of the congregation available as a neighborhood service centre and establishing an appropriate community ministry to respond to identified need. Following the approval of these recommendations, a task force was created to work with the congregational planning group and the City Community Development Officer. In 1988, Davenport-Perth United Church entered into a partnership with the Davenport-Perth Neighborhood Centre and leased the church building and manse at 1900 Davenport Road. The Davenport-Perth Community Ministry is overseen by a group of community residents, community minister(s), community organization partners, a member of the South West Presbytery and two representatives from Davenport-Perth Community Church. The ministry manages and participates in various programs for the community, including housing support, community economic development, entrepreneurship, and children's activities. It is still an active ministry of the United Church of Canada.
