Administrative history

The community of West Lorne had its origins the Canada Southern Railway. Originally named Bismarck after the German chancellor, the community was renamed West Clayton, Dutton, Lorne and finally West Lorne. The name came from the Lorne Mills on the south side of the railway, themselves named for the Marquess of Lorne. The station itself was renamed West Lorne in 1907 to avoid confusion with a community named Bismarck in Lincoln County.
On June 14th, Elgin County Council approved a by-law making West Lorne a police village. The Police Village of West Lorne existed from 1902 to 1907. The Village of West Lorne was incorporated as a municipality on December 21, 1907.
In 1994, Aldborough and Rodney amalgamated to form an expanded Township of Aldborough.
On January 1st, 1998, the Township of Aldborough and the Village of West Lorne amalgamated to form the Municipality of West Elgin.
