    Administrative history

In 1825, John Totten secured a patent for the southwest quarter of Lot 8, Concession 2 in Tecumseth Township. Later in 1835 or 1836, Alexander Totten, a member of John's family started a store on Lot 6, Concession 3. In 1840 Alex took a wife and this couple lived here for more than 50 years. Beside them a village grew up and when a post office opened up in 1858, the name Tottenham was chosen as a compliment to the pioneer of the locality. In 1884 under County By-Law No 378, Tottenham was incorporated as a village.
