    Name of creator

    Administrative history

    Essa, named for the daughter of an Indian Chief, was first surveyed as a Township in 1820. In 1821, under the "Act for the better division of this province" Essa became a Township in the District of Simcoe. It was not until 1850 that Essa Township was incorporated.

    Custodial history

    The records of the Township of Essa were in the possession of the Clerk until they were transferred to the Simcoe County Archives.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of assessment rolls and appeals, bylaws, council minute books, cheque registers, financial statements, general journals and ledgers, petitions, school records and a variety of other miscellaneous records. The fonds currently consists of three series based on the file classification groups identified in the Corporation of the Township of Essa Schedule “A” of the Records Retention Bylaw No. 97-51: Fonds is comprised of the following series: 1) Clerks Department Series, 2) Financial Department Series 3) Miscellaneous Series
