The Canadian Niagara Power Company was incorporated in 1892 under the leadership of William Birch Rankine and is the only Niagara Falls power company to remain privately owned. As of 2015, Canadian Niagara Power is a wholly owned subsidiary of FortisOntario Inc.
The Ontario Power Company (OPC) was a private, American-owned firm that applied successfully in 1901 for a share of the water flowing over Niagara Falls. In 1905, the company built its hydro-electric generating plant below the Horseshoe Falls. In 1999, the Ontario Power Generation Company (formerly Ontario Hydro) decommissioned the Ontario Power Station from service and agreements were concluded in 2006 for the transfer of this plant as well as other Niagara properties to the Niagara Parks Commission.
