Biographical history
John George Bourinot, writer, journalist, and clerk of the House of Commons, was born on 24 October 1836 in Sydney, Nova Scotia and died on 13 October 1902 in Ottawa. He was the son of John Bourinot and Margaret Jane Marshall. Bourinot attended Trinity College, Toronto, but did not complete his degree, probably for financial reasons. However, he remained associated with the college in various capacities for the rest of his life. He was a member of its council, and occasional lecturer and examiner in constitutional law and political science. He also commenced a career in political journalism and in December 1880 became first clerk of the House of Commons; he served in that position until his death. He published a novel and a few short stories, but more important were his political histories, textbooks, and manuals on parliamentary proceedures. He married three times, firstly, on 1 September 1858 in Toronto, Bridget Delia Houck (a widow) and they had two sons; secondly, on 3 October 1865, in Halifax, Emily Alden Pilsbury, and they had one son and two daughters; and thirdly, on 3 July 1889, in Regina, Isabelle Cameron, and they had two sons.
