Biographical history

Alain Bussières was born in Charny, Quebec, on April 28, 1952. His family moved to Cochrane Ontario, in 1959. He completed his secondary school studies at Le Collège de Hearst and then enrolled at the University of Ottawa, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography and a Bachelor degree in Education. In 1975, he married Hélène Thiffault. The couple had four children: Martin, Guylaine, Marc-André, and Marie-Josée. After having taught a few years in Iroquois Falls, he continued his teaching career in Embrun. As a teacher and a collector, he assembled archival records related to the history of the railway and the geography of Northern Ontario. Alain Bussières passed away on April 26, 2017.

Scope and content

The collection contains textual records related to Northern Ontario railway networks, including an incomplete serie of schedules of the Canadian National (CN) passenger train, which ran through Northern Ontario between 1953 and 1989 and of VIA Rail’s schedule from 1987 to 1997. An incomplete collection of the magazine Branchline, student yearbooks from Iroquois Falls High School, newspaper clippings, a map and flyers about the tourist attractions of Northern Ontario are also part of the collection.

The collection, a donation from Alain Bussières, was acquired between 2015 and 2017.
