Histoire administrative
The Cold Weather Test Detachment had functioned at Ladd Field in Fairbanks, Alaska since the winter of 1940-41. During the spring of 1942 the detachment was disrupted and dispersed to meet the emergency requirements caused by the Japanese situation. As a result it was not until late in the winter of 1942-43 that a complete detachment was available at Ladd Field. It was reactivated in July 1942 by the Office of the Chief of the Army Forces which recognized the need for intensive cold weather tests. The detachment was directed that winterization directives for all aircraft be prepared with the view to carrying out accelerated and intensive cold weather tests with the least practicable delay.

Portée et contenu
Fonds consists of volumes 1 and 2 of a Report of the Cold Weather Test Detachment covering the winter of 1942-43. Winterizing requirements applying to all combat and cargo aircraft were issued in August 1942 and Ladd Field was responsible to test those aircraft that were to meet these new requirements. The results of these tests were documented in this two-volume report. The goal of the report was to record the most important features of the cold weather tests, and make recommendations for future test programs as well as future operations of tactical units in Arctic regions. All pertinent problems including winterization are also discussed in it. The Report of the Cold Weather Test Detachment is divided into the following parts: the General Report, Test Aircraft Reports, Miscellaneous Reports, Commercial Representatives' Reports, Laboratory Reports, and Reference Material.
