Custodial history

The Canadian National Exhibition held and hosted annual art exhibitions from its beginnings in 1879 until recent memory. In 1902, the CNE constructed its first building devoted solely to the display of fine art. These art shows proved so popular that a second, larger, Art Gallery was constructed in 1905.
The first art gallery was renamed "the Graphic Arts and Photography Building" and featured international photographic exhibitions, most often in association with the Toronto Camera Club.
The second structure carried on the tradition of bringing paintings and sculptures from around the world to CNE visitors, though Canadian art and artists were always included and often featured. The Art Gallery was demolished in 1972.
Catalogues and guides were produced for each major art exhibition.
The Art Catalogue Collection arrived in the CNE Archives through assorted donations and purchases, predominently in the 1980s. Some of the catalogues do have accession information, and when possible this information has been included.

Scope and content

The CNE Art Catalogue Collection consists of art exhibition catalogues spanning the years 1879 - 1974. The collection is arranged chronologically.
Each catalogue includes information on the art and artists included in the exhibition, and often include examples of some of the works.
