Administrative history
The Sewerage and Public Works Commission was established in 1912 under by-law by City of Guelph Council. The commission was mandated to manage the construction, operation and maintenance of sewage and public works in the City of Guelph. It was composed of the mayor and two commissioners, who were elected for one year terms by Guelph residents. The precise date of the commission's dissolution is not known.
Custodial history
The custodial history of these records, prior to their transfer to the Guelph Public Library archives, is not known or documented. It is believed that these records were transferred to the Guelph Public Libary archives in the 1980's.
Scope and content
Series consists of three bound minute books which document the meetings of the Sewerage and Public Works Commission of the City of Guelph. Included in this series are meeting minutes, copies of correspondence sent by the commission, and recommendations of the commission with regard to the watering, paving and oiling of streets, accounts payment, construction, maintenance and inspection of bridges, roads, sidewalks, sewers and house sewer connections, determination of sewer and local improvement charges, land appropriations and the judgement of damage claims from local residents and businesses resulting from sewer and public works conducted by the City. These records document the work of the commission in administering and managing the City of Guelph's sewage and public works infrastructures.
The volumes have been arranged chronologically by year.

Arrangement
The loose 1914-1918 commission correspondence and index has been filed in a folder because of conservation reasons. Please note that the 1912-1914 minutes of the Sewerage and Public Works Commission are in the same bound ledger as the Public Works Committee minutes for 1910-1912 (series F2-6-6). The 1918 Sewerage and Public Works Commission minutes are located in the same bound ledger as the Public Works Committee for 1919-1925 (series F2-6-6).

General note
It is believed that the Sewerage and Public Works Commission succeeded the Public Works Committee in early 1912 as part of the City of Guelph's experiment with commission government during the progressive era. It is also believed that the commission was superceded by the Public Works Committee in 1919. The mandates of these two bodies are similiar in scope and focus and may account for the gap in the minutes of the Public Work Committee (series F2-6-6) for 1912-1919.
