    Administrative history

    The Director General Maritime Systems was responsible in the late 1960s and early 1970s for:
    • The engineering integrity of maritime warfare systems;
    • Maritime warfare, technology and development;
    • The systems engineering of maritime warfare systems with relation to the total defence system;
    • Engineering policy in the maritime systems fields, for which he is the design authority;
    • Initiating, managing, or directing system feasibility studies and design, development, engineering, manufacturing, or acquisition programmes to meet operational requirements;
    • Design authority with respect to material design changes, product improvement, and conversions;
    • Engineering liaison in support of operational requirements; and
    • Technical trials and test plans to facilitate engineering assessment, evaluation, and acceptance.

    Biographical history

    Arthur Graham Bridgman (1917-2004) entered the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) as a sub-lieutenant in 1941. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy and in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN). After the war he held appointments as senior engineer officer and as senior assistant engineer. Promoted to captain in 1959, he was appointed as director marine and electrical engineering at Naval Headquarters. After a series of other appointments, he was promoted to commodore in 1964, became the Director General Maritime Systems during 1968-1970 and became Director-General of Sea Engineering in 1965. Graham retired in 1973 and was a stockbroker with RBC Dominion Securities, 1973-92. He died in 2004.

    Biographical history

    William Borden Christie (1919- ) entered the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1941 and transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in 1949. He served on the HMCS Nootka during a tour of duty with the United Nations fleet in Korea in 1950. Following various staff and command appointments, he was appointed director of weapons systems at naval headquarters in 1962. He became the director of maritime equipment engineering at Canadian Forces Headquarters (CFHQ) in 1967 and took command of HMC Dockyard, Halifax. He was appointed Director General Management Systems at CFHQ in 1970. Promoted to rear-admiral in 1972, he was appointed Deputy Chief Engineering that same year.

    Subseries consists of chronological files and reference files detailing the activities of Commodore Arthur Graham Bridgman and Commodore William Borden Christie when they were the Director General Maritime Systems during 1967 to 1971. Includes memoranda, correspondence, minutes to meetings, itineraries, significant action reports and other reports, messages and other documents. The subseries is arranged in chronological order.
