      History

The choir Chœur Franc-Nord was founded in October 1990 by Robert Vachon, then a member of the Conseil des Arts de Hearst’s board. He was convinced that the population of Hearst had a special interest in choral singing. Under the direction of Charles Dallaire, a professional musician, 25 to 35 singers from Hearst participated in this cultural activity. The choir interpreted a variety of songs : popular, love, folklore, famous classical, Christmas, old liturgical and Negro Spirituals. Rehearsals used to take place every Tuesday evening from September to May. Occasionally the Chœur Franc-Nord organized concerts in collaboration with choirs from Kapuskasing and Longlac.

The choir’s objective was to achieve financial autonomy. To reach that goal, the members payed a registration fee. The admission fee to the concerts also contributed to the funding of the choir. The Chœur Franc-Nord ceased its activities in 1999.
