    Biographical history

Charles Wallis Forbes is listed as a clerk with the Grand Trunk Railway (GTR), boarding at 273 Charlotte Street, Peterborough (1888-1889 City Directory). Forbes identifies himself as Assistant on construction of Hasting Bridge over the Trent River, for the Grand Trunk Railway. Forbes was also associated with the 57th Regiment. The 57th nominal roll (88-013/ box 3) and the 57th register and service roll (88-013/ Box17/ page 7) indicate that Forbes was born in 1865, was single, was an engineer working for the GTR and that he volunteered for the 57th on July 1, 1886. He eventually reached the rank of 2nd Lieutanant and served as quarter master before resigning in May 1892. Forbes appears to have made a voyage to Britain and Europe about 1893, since some of the sketches document his travels. Forbes writes his name as 'C. Wallis Forbes' on one page inside the sketchbook. Charles Wallis Forbes was a first cousin of Canadian artist, Katharine E. Wallis.

    Custodial history

At some point the sketchbook was acquired by the Peterborough Public Library and added to the Peterborough Collection. In November 1999 it was culled from this collection and transferred to the City Archives as a preservation measure.
