    Biographical history

    Charles Moss was born on March 8th, 1840, in Cobourg (Canada West) to John Moss, brewer, and Anne Quigley. He married Emily Sullivan and together they had nine children. Moss was admitted to Osgoode Hall as a student in 1864 and was called to the Bar in 1869. He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1881. Moss served as a Justice of the Court of Appeal (1897-1902) and Chief Justice of Ontario (1902-1912). Moss was a lecturer at Osgoode Hall Law School (1872-1878) and oversaw the curriculum when the school reopened in 1889. He served as a bencher of the Law Society of Upper Canada (1880 to 1897), a University of Toronto Senator (1884), and president of the York Law Association (1891-1892). Moss received a knighthood in 1907. Moss died in Toronto on October 11th, 1912.

    Fonds consists of records relating to the legal career of Sir Charles Moss. Records include an insurance policy, a letter to Chief Justice Thomas Taylor, court admission certificates, and two illuminated volumes prepared in his memory by the Judges of the Supreme Court of Judicature and by the Senate of the University of Toronto.
