Collection PF136 - Charles Ernest Smalley-Baker collection

Charles Ernest Smalley-Baker was born on January 29th, 1891 in Randolph, New Brunswick. He attended Acadia University, where he graduated with a B.A. degree in 1912, and later attended Harvard Law School. Smalley-Baker returned to New Brunswick in June of 1915, where he was commissioned into the 28th New Brunswick Dragoons. During the First World War, he served in France with the 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders. After the war, Smalley-Baker received a Rhodes Scholarship and attended Oxford University. In February of 1921, Smalley-Baker married Mary Hadland. Smalley-Baker practiced law in London, England, for a few years before being offered a law professor position at the University of Birmingham. In 1928, he became the first Dean of the newly created Faculty of Law at the University of Birmingham, a position he held until 1949. During the Second World War, Smalley-Baker was commissioned as a major in the 29th Home Guard Battalion. In 1945, he served as President Adjoint of the 4th International Congress of Comparative Law. In Hall Law School. He resigned as Dean in 1958, and became Dean Emeritus. Smalley-Baker died on November 2nd, 1972.
