Biographical history
Marjorie Chambers (1894-1988?) was the granddaughter of Major Robert Chambers (1811-1881) and his wife Catherine Lucas Nesbitt (1823-1877) who were early settlers in Norwich Ontario. Marjorie was a teacher who lived at Kennevar, the family farm near Woodstock, Ontario with her sisters Bessie and Louise. The Chambers family came from County Tyrone, Ireland. Pioneer Robert Chambers (1770-1831) brought his family to Canada in 1819. His son Major Robert Chambers (1811-1877) and his wife Catherine Lucas Nesbitt (1823-1877) settled near Norwich, Ontario were their two daughters; Eliza and Kate and four sons; Robert, James, William Nesbitt and John Nesbitt were born. The family history demonstrated a strong commitment to higher education with many attending Queen's University in Kingston and Princeton University in New Jersey. The Chambers family values were to use higher education in support God's work. Many family members worked as missionaries upon graduation.
Custodial history
Collection was obtained by Eleanor Gardhouse, Oxford Historical Society. She donated part of the collection to Norwich & District Archives in 1988.
Scope and content
Collection consists of correspondence, documents, notes, clippings, photographs, scrapbooks and ephemera related to the Chambers family from 1819-1978 and local history of East Oxford, Oxford County. Topics include; missions to the Armenians in Turkey late 19th century, Oxford Militia, St. Andrews Anglican Church in Norwich, Old St. Paul's Anglican church in Woodstock and Robert Chambers biology papers on cell growth.
