E.A. Carpenter first appears in local directories in 1892 as a contractor. By 1894 he operated Carpenter and Co., timber and tie contractors, out of his home on 249 Main St., Fort William, in what is now Thunder Bay, Ontario. He took over and operated the Oliver-Davidson Sawmill on the banks of the Kam River.
