The Carleton Library Series, later known as Carleton University Press, was a venture launched by the Institute of Canadian Studies in 1963. It was the first publication project of its kind in Canada. The purpose of this venture was to publish and make available inexpensive paperback editions of important works in the fields of Canadian history, politics, economics, anthropology, sociology, geography, and journalism. In the early years, the Carleton Library Series was published by McClelland and Stewart. Carleton University Press became an independant pubisher in 1981. The decision, taken by President Beckel and the senior administration of the time, to self-publish was mainly due to the belief that the Press was an important academic enterprise of the University, adding lustre to the scholarly enterprise of the faculty. Until its closure in 1999, the main body of the Press list was made up of the Carleton Library Series, which drew from the fields of Canadian history, politics, law, economics, sociology, anthropology, geography, science, business, and media studies. Other subjects covered by Carleton University Press included art, international affairs, literature, philosophy, biography, and aboriginal peoples. The Press also published the Public Policy Series, the Centre for Editing Early Canadian Texts Series, the Women's Experience Series, the Harbinger Poetry Series, the Changing Americas Series, the International Social Survey Programming Series, the International Informatics Series, the Archives of Canadian Art Series, general trade, and miscellaneous lists, as well as producing several journals including the Literary Review of Canada. As a viable small business, Carleton University Press offered graduate and undergraduate students opportunities to gain first-hand experience in the publishing field. This was done through several programs, including graduate students internships, practicums in Canadian Studies, volunteering through The College for the Humanities, and other fields relating to editing, marketing, and publishing.
