Administrative history
At a meeting on 1953-3-8, Lithuanians living in and around Edmonton decided that they needed a centre for their community’s activities and proposed building their own hall which could also be used for church services. A building committee was formed to study the feasibility of various options and to report back to the community. Having gotten the community’s approval the building committee purchased a lot, commissioned plans for the building and incorporated the “Canadian Lithuanian Society of Edmonton Ltd.” The Society would be the owner of the hall and its members would be those who contributed to the building of the hall with cash donations or by physically participating in the construction. Construction of the hall located at 11629 83 Street NW in Edmonton started on 1953-7-25. On 1954-2-21, the first events were held at the new hall. These were the Lithuanian Independence Day commemoration and a shareholders meeting for the Canadian Lithuanian Society of Edmonton during which the Society’s first executive committee was elected. "Lietuvių Namai", as the hall is known in Lithuanian, has been the centre of Edmonton's Lithuanian community's activities since its construction. The Canadian Lithuanian Society of Edmonton was still active in 2010.
