    Administrative history

The Canadian Forces Staff School (CFSS) was a component of the Canadian Forces College and was responsible for conducting the Staff School Course (SSC), the first in a series of graduate officer education courses in the Canadian Defence College system. The SSC was established in Toronto in 1960 when 46 students, all officers in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), graduated. Since the first course, the officer representation and course loadings have been adjusted to include the former three Services. The first integrated course commenced in September, 1966. The aim of the SSC was to prepare junior officers to perform staff functions of a general nature that were appropriate to their rank and to help provide the foundation for their subsequent professional development. It was attended by 96 students at Captain rank who had an average of ten years in the service. One SSC each year included a number of foreign national students.
