History
The Director of Naval Operations (ca. 1963-1964) was responsible to the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Plans) for fleet employment, shipping control, hydrography and weather services. More specifically he:
- provided information and advice on the employment, movement, organization and operational availability of the fleet, including air squadrons, and auxiliary vessels;
- advised on naval aspects of safety in nuclear powered vessels;
- co-ordinated the clearance arrangements for HMC and foreign warships' visits;
- selected names and numbers for HMC ships, establishments, and auxiliary vessels;
- made recommendations on the policy and plans for the Royal Canadian Navy's participation in NATO for the organization, control and protection of allied shipping, and the co-ordination of these plans with civil authorities;
- administered the Movement Reporting Center in Ottawa;
- co-ordinated and directed naval activities in the fields of hydrography, meterology and oceanography.
The Director of Naval Operations was a member of the Naval Staff, the Inter-departmental Committee on Search and Rescue, the Sub-Committee of the Advisory Committee on Northern Affairs, the Inter-departmental Committee on Ports and Emergency Anchorages, the Ships characteristics Panel and the Planned Maintenance Committee.
