History
In 1930, the first unit in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) dedicated to experimental and test flying was formed in Rockcliffe. Initially, the unit’s name was known as Test Flight, but eventually was re-designated to the RCAF Test and Development Establishment on 29 November, 1940. The name of the present Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) has changed many times over the years in reflection of the lands use. In 1940, with advancing wartime operations the demand for experimental test flying greatly increased. With these demands, the war effort saw an increase in the number of operating units and personnel. In addition, aerial survey activities, transportation and aircraft testing functions were conducted on the land. The site also provided the grounds for several training schools for photography, fighter control, aircraft recognition, communication, and a testing kitchen. Various aircrafts were tested at the Rockcliffe site and all underwent rigorous testing prior to its acceptance into the RCAF and eventual use in the war years.
