History

At unification of the armed forces in 1968, the former functions of the Queen's Harbour Master (QHM) were re-assigned to the Base Operations Officer, and the QHM staff was an adjunct to CFB Esquimalt. The QHM was re-established as a unit in 1974. When Transport Canada transferred responsibility to the Department of National Defence, the Queen's Harbour Master became the Transport Canada designated Harbour Authority for Esquimalt Harbour. The QHM is responsible for naval ship control within Esquimalt Harbour to ensure incoming vessels are berthed with due consideration to operational priority, repair and maintenance schedules, as well as international courtesy. The QHM has responsibility for all logistic requirements of Canadian and visiting warships in port.
