    Biographical history

    Charles Cameron (1830-1904) was born in Scotland and emigrated to Peterborough, Canada West, in 1856. He married Sophia Barron in 1859 and together they had four children: Annie Walker, Alfred and Albert (twins) and Sophia. Two other children died in infancy. In 1860, Charles Cameron and Donald McKellar formed a business partnership and opened a general store in Peterborough. After the store burned in 1869, Charles became an insurance agent and steamboat ticket agent. Albert Cameron was a curtain and draperies merchant and Alfred Cameron became a Provincial Land Surveyor

    Fonds was in the custody of descendants of Charles Cameron until donated to Trent University.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists of personal and business correspondence and papers of several members of the Cameron family. It includes correspondence between Charles Cameron and his wife Sophia, records and accounts of McKellar and Cameron Dry Goods Merchants, personal and business correspondence of Alfred Cameron regarding his surveying work. Also includes survey reports on various townships, villages and towns in Peterborough County, the United Counties of Durham and Northumberland, Simcoe County, Nipissing District and the Cochrane District.
