    Biographical history

    In 1832 the James Calcutt family arrived in Canada and settled initially in Cobourg. The family operated a distillery near the corner of George Street and University Avenue in Cobourg. In 1855 James Calcutt's son Henry, came to Peterborough with his bride, Isabella Green. By 1863, Henry Calcutt has established a large stone brewery between the Otonabee River and Burnham Street in Ashburnham (now site of James Stevenson Park). The business was very successful until Prohibition. It closed in 1922. Henry Calcutt died in 1913.

    This material was found in the Calcutt family home in Ashburnham and subsequently acquired by the City Archives.

    Scope and content

    The fonds consists of legal documents, stock certificates, some photographs, military records, genealogical material and ephemera. Specific items include: Brewer's License (1900); receipts and correspondence (Calcutt Brewing letterhead); Calcutt Brewery business ledger; a patent document with original plans on linen, for Henry Calcutt's "Improvements in Steam Boilers" (1895); lease indenture from Arthur Peck to Henry Calcutt relating to Calcutt Brewery property; assorted Calcutt family legal documents including original deed to family home at 73 Robinson, Ashburnham; minutes of the stockholders meeting (1911-33); receipt for a keg of ale for $1.50 (1886); a poem about an accidental spill at Calcutt's when people gathered gallons of beer that was pouring out of a spout; brief histories of some of the steamboats owned by Calcutt; some newspaper clippings.
