    Biographical history

    Sir Casimir Stanislaus Gzowski (1813-1898) was an engineer in Ontario who also made contributions in the areas of defense and education.

    Scope and content

    Fonds consists primarily of correspondence dealing with the professional life of Sir Casimir Gzowski. Correspondence concerns membership in various professional associations, letters of introduction, and his career. Specific engineering projects mentioned in the correspondence include canals, the Pacific railway, and the international bridge at Niagara. Correspondence also includes references to education, defense, the Society of Civil Engineers, and Gzowski's role within the Niagara Parks Commission. Correspondents include W.H. Draper, John A. Macdonald, Edward Blake, Oliver Mowat and several Governors-General of Canada. Fonds also contains some correspondence from relatives in Europe. Fonds also contains clippings and printed material, as well as certificates of membership in engineering societies, awards and printed reports of the Commissioner of Public Works. Many records relate to Gzowski's membership in various societies, and his participation in meetings of engineers. Photographs include family and personal photos of Gzowski, and photos of events in which Gzowski participated. All records in the fonds are arranged in chronological order.
