C.J. Townsend was an artist's agent who lived in London, England. F.A. Verner was Frederick Arthur Verner (1836-1928) born in Hammondsville, Upper Canada and died in London, England. Early in his life he worked as a photographer. He was a painter who specialized in the Canadian West with Indians and buffalo. He was well-known for his Prairie paintings in watercolours. Verner sought to convey an accuracy of his subjects and he also painted large scale oil landscapes, characteristically expressing calmness and peace. He was an artist present at the signing of the North West Angle Treat Lake of the Woods

Fonds consists of letters from F.A. Verner to C.J. Townsend relating to the disposition of his pictures and paintings. From the appearances in these papers, Verner's most-oft-painted subject was the Canadian bison.
