Biographical history
Charles Alexander Buchanan, opthalmologist, was born on April 8, 1909, the son of John Alexander Buchanan and Bertha May Trebilcock. The family resided at 400 Central Avenue in London, Ontario and owned numerous rental properties throughout the city. Charles Alexander Buchanan (8 Apr. 1909 - 17 Feb. 1979) attended the University of Western Ontario, graduating with a B.A. in 1930, and an M.D. in 1934. In 1937, he received a doctorate degree in ophthalmology from Oxford University, UK. While interning at New York’s Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital, Charles met his future wife, Jeanne (variously spelled Jean) Fulton, a registered nurse (1 June 1911 - 18 Jan. 1983). They married at the Central United Church in St. Thomas, Ontario on October 28, 1939. After settling in London, Dr. Buchanan operated a medical practice out of the family home. Although he had begun work with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an eye specialist in September of 1939, Charles was not called to active service until February of 1941 (as a Flight Lieutenant). After the war, Charles resumed his practice at 400 Central Avenue in London. Charles and Jeanne are interred with Charles’ parents, John Alexander and Bertha May, in section D of Mount Pleasant Cemetery in London, Ontario.
