        History

Brooklin Council of the Royal Templars of Temperance, a social organization advocating for moderation and abstinence from alcohol. This particular society was active in Brooklin starting in 1883 and was a local branch of the Royal Templars of Temperance, a Canadian and American organization. The Brooklin Council offered monetary assistance to families in the event that a member fell ill or died - $5 per week during an illness and roughly $500-$2000 on death, provided members upheld their oaths and practiced total abstinence from all forms of alcohol. In addition to providing charity for its members, the Brooklin Council of the Royal Templars of Temperance offered educational lectures for its members and the public on the evils of drinking and regularly made donations to the Toronto Children’s Hospital. The minutes survive to 1900 but it appears that the group continued on beyond that, although for how long is unknown.
